High School Lesson 2: Climate impacts

Purpose:

Following the lesson on climate change, this lesson introduces students to the real-world impacts of climate change and the projections for the future. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to communicate the major impacts of climate change and how a changing climate causes them. They will also be able to identify the impacts likely to affect their communities and those that will impact communities elsewhere in the world more heavily. There are many opportunities to discuss equity throughout this lesson, in terms of which communities and countries are impacted first and hardest by climate change. Access the lesson materials here.

A note: Students may experience anxiety while learning about the seriousness of the impacts of climate change. To alleviate any anxiety, Climable recommends following this lesson with the Climate Solutions lesson, assigning a research project on climate solutions, and/or having an open class discussion about students’ feelings around climate impacts. The best way to ease climate anxiety, as it’s called, is to show students that they’re not helpless in the face of climate change and that they can make a difference in their communities and beyond.
