Middle School Lesson 3: Microgrids

The image above links to the lesson materials.

Overview:

A microgrid is a small-scale independent power system that can provide electricity to buildings when the main grid experiences an outage. Microgrids use a local source of energy located in close proximity to the buildings they power, and are typically physically connected with a power line. However, virtually-connected microgrids exist as well. In this configuration, the buildings are powered by on-site sources of energy and linked together using cloud-based software. There are many benefits to virtual microgrids, as well as some drawbacks. In this lesson, students will learn about the main power grid, microgrids, and the various relevant details and considerations. They will also learn about energy justice and how microgrids can deliver it. Access the lesson materials here.
